The course provides aspiring Music Educators the opportunity to explore a broad range of historical and contemporary educational theories. The course will also examine the applications of these theories in the modern classroom setting through placement experience.

Course Description

This course is based in a student-centred approach introducing and critiquing a broad range of historical and contemporary educational theories and how they articulate with Scotland’s Curriculum – Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). Students will be encouraged to begin to form their own educational philosophy.

This course will include students’ first School Placement. Students, in pairs, will undertake 5 days of school placement throughout Term 2. Whilst on Placement students will observe teachers in action looking closely at how Educational Theories are used to bring CfE to life in the classroom.

The course explores a range of content including an introduction to approaches to education in Scotland (including CfE, GIRFEC and Child Protection), overview and importance of Educational Theories, Educational Theories in the Classroom (case study approach), developing a personal educational philosophy.

Feedback

Students will be required to create a 15 minute Vlog.

The Vlog will be recorded in an interview format (working with their placement pairing) reflecting on the students School Placement experience and with a focus on their observations of the use of CfE and Educational Theories and how it impacts the development of their own educational philosophy.

Written feedback will be provided on both assessments via MyAberdeen.
