Course Overview

This course is for Medical Humanities students and can be taken by students who have the required level of Spanish.

The course will develop further Spanish language skills, both receptive and productive. Classes on grammatical and linguistic analysis will contribute to the development of both sets of skills.

Course Description

The course will involve two closely integrated classes per week to develop speaking, writing and listening skills,
and a further hour to assist students towards the rapid development of communicative fluency. 'In addition to the three weekly classes, contact hours, the course has a complete structured self-learning students follow a programme of private audio-visual study and grammatical reinforcement study.

The audiovisual resources are part of the individual study. Following a series of videos the course provides insights into the life and culture of each of the Spanish speaking countries.

In general, from the point of view of grammar the course will consolidate knowledge of all past tenses and introduce new uses of the subjunctive.

From the point of view of communication, the course focuses on student participation in familiar topics to describe experiences and events, to express hopes and ambitions, to describe feelings, give reasons, opinions and preferences as well as stating obligations, and expressing certainty in informal discussions.

In conclusion the course will cover how to initiate and maintain spontaneous conversations, expressing and defending opinions in a discussion.
