Course Description

International trade law is a dynamic area of law with significant importance in an increasingly economically interdependent and globalised world. In recent years, digital technologies, such as blockchain technology, have been transforming international trade and commerce globally, and legal frameworks supporting paperless trade are serving as a key enabler for facilitating this digital transformation and technological innovation. There is also an increased emphasis on sustainable development matters in international trade and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

This course considers commercial law aspects of international trade to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed in this dynamic and important area. It focuses on legal and commercial matters arising from export-import transactions in a cross-border context and addresses issues concerning international sale and carriage of goods, insurance, payment and finance, and international commercial dispute resolution by litigation and arbitration. The course also considers the impact of digitalisation on international trade, including the use of blockchain technology, and sustainable development matters. Under this broad structure, the issues selected for examination in the course vary depending on contemporary developments in the field.
