This course is for students preparing their residence abroad, as part of their degree requirements on Modern Languages (Mode A and Mode B) or Translation and Interpreting programmes. This course carries no credits in itself, but provides essential support and guidance as MLTI students organise their residence abroad to meet their degree requirements.
The course is used to:
• share information on the options, timeline and steps of the preparation
• communicate with students before and during their residence abroad
• build community among students preparing to go abroad and encourage peer support.
Regular engagement with the course will enable students to make choices that reflect their individual priorities, meet deadlines, access funding opportunities, gain support and manage the inevitable unknowns of a residence abroad.
Students will have the opportunity to hone their organisation, time management, priority-setting and self-motivation skills as they research and select their options and complete relevant administrative tasks to deadlines, independently with appropriate support.
Students will begin to develop the adaptability, resilience and intercultural competence that they will develop further while abroad, as they navigate different educational, professional and administrative systems and processes to prepare to reside abroad. They will learn to expect cultural differences in a range of contexts while abroad, and will workshop unexpected situations in groups prior to departure to train themselves to think flexibly, problem-solve and seek support as appropriate during their mobility.
Students will also be encouraged to take a reflective approach to their skills development, identify any gaps in the skills (linguistic and otherwise) that their plans require, strategise their development both prior to departure and during their stay abroad, and learn to articulate the benefits of their residence abroad in terms of employability and personal development.
Finally, students will develop their eye for detail, professionalism and employability in completing a range of applications to high standards of accuracy and competence, and to match specific parameters. For instance, they might complete applications for a study place, a traineeship, a visa, and Turing and other funding sources. Several of these application processes involve interviews unfolding in two languages, providing gentle exposure to the experience of applying for a job or for funding in international contexts.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
