Course Overview

This course aims to build knowledge in financial analysis techniques. It will allow students to understand the key elements of financial analysis by undertaking fundamental and technical analyses. The course helps students understand and use credit analysis. It will also discuss financial distress in depth to build students’ ability to think about the implications of financial performance for investors and financial institutions.

 

The course combines theoretical valuation models with practical applications to help students prepare themselves for the role of financial analyst in the industry.

Course Description

This course is to equip students with comprehensive analytical skills in order to develop a framework for business analysis and valuation using financial statement data in a variety of contexts using MS Excel. 

 

The topics are covered in the course may include but not be limited to 

  1. Introduction to Financial Analysis – Fundamental concepts and financial modelling techniques.
  2. Financial Statement Analysis – Interpretation of income statements, balance sheets, and key financial metrics.
  3. Valuation Techniques – Application of discounted cash flow (DCF) models and profitability analysis.
  4. Adjustments to Financial Statements – Identifying and adjusting for non-recurring items and financial complexities.
  5. Ratio Analysis & Benchmarking – Evaluating company performance using financial ratios and industry comparisons.
  6. Assessing Financial Health – Methods for evaluating a company’s financial stability and risk factors.
  7. Sector-Specific Financial Analysis – Insights into financial analysis for industries such as banking, mining, and oil & gas.
  8. Introduction to Technical Analysis – Fundamental principles of market psychology and price movement analysis.
  9. Charting & Patterns – Trend identification, chart patterns, and candlestick analysis for forecasting.
  10. Momentum & Market Indicators – Application of momentum indicators and oscillators in market evaluation.
