Course Description

This course provides students with the opportunity to pursue the individual specialized study of Film and Visual Culture (FVC). The distinctive feature of the dissertation is that, unlike any other courses in FVC, the teaching process is through one-to-one supervision with an appropriate member of staff, and the topic of the dissertation while mediated by the advice of the supervisor, is the student's choice. Students will be supported in their dissertations through supervisory meetings and two group workshops which will take place during the semester.

Students can elect to undertake a written or a practical dissertation. The written dissertation is a research essay of 8,000 words (+/- 10%). Practical dissertations involve the production of a piece of creative work such as a short film or portfolio of visual material and an accompanying essay of 5,000 words (+/- 10%).

The dissertation is a piece of independent work, the culmination of your undergraduate work in FVC, and an opportunity to demonstrate what you can do when freed from the usual constraints of time, space and subject matter imposed by coursework and examinations.
