This course aims to provide students with a detailed knowledge of inclusion within the Scottish context. It will explore research on inclusion, policy documents and implementation over time. This will include specific additional support needs (ASN), including ADHD, Specific learning needs, Communication disorders and Social emotional behaviour needs.

Throughout the course students will explore inclusive practice and policy in Scotland. Inclusion is a foundation principle of Scottish Education, and this course aims to develop students’ knowledge of the research and policy landscape that underpin the foundations of inclusion and inclusive practice in Scotland.
Students will explore a range of Additional Support Needs (ASN) as well as the need for differentiation in learning & teaching approaches for all children to provide equal opportunities and equal access to the curriculum. Students will explore the barriers to learning that give rise to the wide range of ASN including physical & socio-economic. Students will explore approaches to meeting these needs within a classroom including organisation and behaviour management techniques/ strategies. The course will provide an opportunity to gain broad knowledge and understanding of antecedents or underlying causes of children’s challenging behaviour as well as opportunities to study an aspect of ASN in more depth and detail.

They will use this critical analysis to consider the potential implications for professional practice.
