Course Description

Modern education is increasingly seen through the lens of student well-being, being the venue for the provision of interventions and having the potential for it to be the venue for the development of social and emotional skills which ensure ongoing mental health. In this module students will be introduced to theories which conceptualise the role of education as a social, pedagogical mental health practice. Alongside this, students will examine initiatives and activities occurring within contemporary education which are aimed at mental health and wellbeing, including mindfulness in schools, schools counselling, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

Students will undertake critical discussion to navigate the social, political, and practice barriers to deploying mental health activities within systems across primary, secondary and tertiary education.
