This team-taught course will explore relevant questions of social importance using the tool of philosophical thinking. Students will engage with philosophical arguments and concepts central to various domains, including technology, health care, digital knowledge, migration, and sport.

The course examines key issues in applied philosophical research. Applied philosophy is about approaching a set of societal challenges or real-life problems using the tools, principles, or insights of philosophy. Applied philosophy comprises every branch of philosophy, where a relevant and specific question of social importance or everyday life is addressed, often with input from empirical science. In this course, drawing on the resources of social epistemology, social ontology, feminist philosophy, and political philosophy, we will explore topics such as migration, digital knowledge, refugees crisis, health care and funeral provision, technology, gender issues, sport.
With this course, the students will reach a critical understanding of philosophical concepts, arguments theories and methods. They will develop the ability to apply philosophical understanding and skills to social questions and problems.
The course will be taught in a lecture and tutorial format with readings assigned each week. The lecture will cover and expand on the set reading. In the tutorial we will discuss the issues raised by the reading and in the lecture. No philosophy background is required.
