EA2502: SOLIDS AND STRUCTURES (2023-2024)

Last modified: 23 Jul 2024 10:43

Course Overview

This course provides students with the opportunity to refresh and extend their knowledge to analyse the mechanical behaviour of engineering materials and structures. In particular, mechanical properties of materials, and 2D and 3D stresses and strains are examined, the effects of internal imperfections on the performance of materials under loading, brittle fracture, fatigue and non-destructive testing are discussed. The structural analysis of beams and columns, deflection and buckling, as well as design applications are also considered in the course.

Course Description

The course will commence with the review of definitions of normal and shear stresses and strains, and elastic stress-strain relationships. Subsequently, the brittle fracture and fatigue will be examined with introduction of the stress intensity factors, fracture toughness and S-N curves. The final part of the course will be focused on design applications and structural analysis, namely on the theory of elastic bending of beams, beams deflection, bending and buckling, virtual work, integration method, etc.
