This course will entail research work which will contribute to musicological understanding (at undergraduate level). Students will research a topic of their own choice (subject to approval), demonstrating knowledge and understanding of their chosen subject matter in the form of a 10,000 word dissertation.

Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved musicological topic.
The dissertation is an opportunity to manage a larger-scale project on a topic that interests you, and to demonstrate your ability to undertake independent research and study.
To get the most out of the supervision on offer, it is important:
• to work consistently throughout the year, organising your time efficiently;
• to be able to report on progress at each supervision;
• to have produced some work (not necessarily written) for each supervision that can be the focus of discussion within the group, or between you and the supervisor;
• to attend supervisions with a clear sense of what you hope to gain from them – for example, by bringing a list of questions and queries with you.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.

Annotated bibliographies must contain at least a dozen items, the majority of which must be peer reviewed. The presentation of bibliography must comply with guidance on referencing for music students (footnote style) or referencing for education students (author-date style). Annotations should typically be two or three sentences in length and should clearly set out the significance of the item in the context of the student’s work. When reviewing submissions, supervisors will expect to see clear rationale for why items are included as well as evidence that students understand the relevant research context. |

At the midway point of the course students should submit 1500 words outlining their topic and approach. The format of this submission is not fixed but supervisors will expect to see clear statements of the research questions addressed in the dissertation as well as the research context (e.g., key work in relevant field(s)) and a justifcation of methods. While supervisors will not expect a detailed plan from start to finish, this formative assessment should include an outline of the dissertation structure. |
