This course serves as the initial introduction to criminology and provides a sociologically based understanding of the key themes in this field, such as crime, deviance, surveillance, punishment, recidivism, reintroduction, social cohesion, and social order. Across the course students are introduced to a variety of case studies which illustrate the centrality of different actors and institutions to both the theory and practice of criminology and criminal justice, including the police, courts, and prisons, as well as additional actors in the criminal justice system.

This course serves as the initial introduction to criminology and provides a sociologically based understanding of the key themes in this field, such as crime, deviance, surveillance, punishment, recidivism, reintroduction, social cohesion, and social order. Across the course students are introduced to a variety of case studies which illustrate the centrality of different actors and institutions to both the theory and practice of criminology and criminal justice, including the police, courts, and prisons, as well as additional actors in the criminal justice system. Building on the initial Introduction to Sociology courses at level 1, this course provides the foundation for students in the Criminology and Sociology programme to progress to Honours level in year 3.
