DE1004: REMOVABLE DENTAL PROSTHODONTICS (2) COMPLETE DENTURES

20 credits

Level 1

First Sub Session

The course introduces the student to complete denture manufacturing processes. It looks at how differing jaw relationships can dictate tooth positioning. More complex problems relating to complete dentures opposing natural lower teeth are shown. This course builds on the skills learned in the previous courses on Primary dental laboratory Skills and Partial dentures.

DE1501: REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES (1)

Second Sub Session

The course introduces the student to the techniques of manufacturing partial dentures. The associated dental biomaterials science and laboratory equipment are taught, demonstrated and applied appropriately. The introduction of denture design theory and manufacturing techniques.

DE1502: ORAL ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

The course introduces the student to the anatomy and physiology relevant to dental technology.

This is an assessment only, with no teaching being provided on this course.

The Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) will assess teaching (knowledge and practical elements) from courses 3 and 4 of the Dip HE in Dental Technology Year 1

DE1003: DENTAL ALLOY TECHNIQUES

20 credits

Level 2

First Sub Session

The course introduces the student to the materials and manufacturing techniques used in the dental laboratory for the manufacturing of metallic dental appliances across all disciplines. Modern materials and techniques based on Computer aided design computer aided machining (CADCAM) are explored.

DE2070: CLINICAL DENTISTRY 2 - YEAR ONE

Clinical Dentistry 2 – Year One.

This course is designed to introduce non-restorative clinical dentistry teaching to the BDS Student. The course teaching in BDS 3, 4 and 5 will build on this initial teaching which is composed of key Local Anaesthesia Infiltration and Local Anaesthetic Block teaching and assessment. Teaching within Clinical Dentistry 2 includes the used of learned clinical techniques within our patient clinics. 

DE2503: DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND PROCESSES

20 credits

Level 2

Second Sub Session

This course covers the essential theoretical and practical knowledge required for the understanding of the design of dental removable prosthodontics and its relevance to meeting the laboratory, clinical prescription and the patient’s expectations.

DE2504: DENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

20 credits

Level 2

Second Sub Session

The course introduces the student to the evidenced based research into the social, cultural and environmental issues that affect patient’s health. The course also looks at the broader sociological, behavioural, environmental and economic factors involved. The effect these factors have on laboratory leadership, management and manufacturing is investigated.

DE2017: FIXED DENTAL PROSTHODONTICS 1

20 credits

Level 3

First Sub Session

The course introduces the student to the manufacturing theory and techniques used in the fabrication of single metallic restorations and substructures. The manufacture of temporary crowns is also undertaken. This course is the first of three in the Fixed Prosthodontic theme and the knowledge gained here is vital for further understanding of the subject.

DE2018: FIXED DENTAL PROSTHODONTICS (2)

This course develops the essential knowledge required for the understanding of ceramic, polymer and composite restorations. These tooth coloured materials are the standard aesthetic components for Fixed Prosthodontic restorations.

DE2505: ORTHODONTIC TECHNOLOGY

20 credits

Second Sub Session

This course introduces essential knowledge required for the understanding  of the theory and practice of manufacturing protective and removable orthodontic appliances. Core knowledge for Orthodontic Laboratory functions.

DE2506: FIXED DENTAL PROSTHODONTICS (3)

20 credits

Second Sub Session

This course continues on from the previous courses on Fixed Prosthodontics.  The theory and practice of bridgework, where multiple teeth are manufactured together in a restoration, are taught, demonstrated and applied. Previous theories and applications of associated biomaterials and techniques are developed for this more advanced course. It concludes the teaching of Fixed Prosthodontics.

DE3070: CLINICAL DENTISTRY 2 - YEAR TWO

This course is designed to build upon the teaching in BDS Year 2, introducing further non-restorative clinical dentistry teaching for the BDS Student. 

 The course teaching in BDS 4 and 5 will build on this teaching which is composed of key Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine sessions. Teaching within Clinical Dentistry 2 includes the used of learned clinical techniques within our patient clinics.

DE4070: CLINICAL DENTISTRY 2 - YEAR THREE

0 credits

Level 4

Full Year

This course is designed to build upon the teaching in BDS Year 2 & 3 within non-restorative clinical dentistry for the BDS Student.

The course teaching in BDS 4 is composed of Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, and this year introduces Special Care Dentistry sessions.

Teaching within Clinical Dentistry 2 includes the used of learned clinical techniques within our patient clinics.

 

DE5070: CLINICAL DENTISTRY 2 - YEAR FOUR

This course is designed to build upon the teaching in BDS Year 2, 3 & 4 within non-restorative clinical dentistry teaching for the BDS Student.
