This course introduces students to the core features of legal systems of the Romano-Germanic tradition, focusing in particular on legal systems which have been imitated elsewhere in the world, namely those of Germany, France and Spain. The course is a compulsory component of the LLB with German Law, the LLB with French Law and the LLB with Spanish Law.

This course provides a conceptual introduction to the Romano-Germanic legal tradition, its global reach, as well as specific features of the French, German and Spanish systems. The course will cover topics such as the rediscovery of Roman Law, the emergence of the codification movement in the 18th century, convergence and divergence in civil law and in selected legal families, as well as selected topics on the substantive law of France, Germany and Spain.
