Students will have the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic of their choosing within Film and Visual Culture. The length of the Honours Film and Visual Culture dissertation must be between 7000 and 8000 words (inclusive of quotations, footnotes etc., but excluding the bibliography and filmography. Nor are appendices containing transcripts, corpora, questionnaires, or other supplementary information, included in the word count). These word limits must be strictly adhered to. Unless special permission has been granted in writing by the Head of Programme, dissertations which exceed or fall short of these limits will be penalised by the examiners. Such permission is only given in very exceptional circumstances. Students may elect to include a practical element as part of their dissertation, which could comprise of a 10 to 20-minute film, and in which case they can submit a shorter written dissertation, 5,000-6,000 words in length.
