Course Overview

Beginning within the context of the Inter-American Cold War, this course addresses one of the seminal events of the twentieth century: the coup against Chile’s democratically elected Socialist government, as well as the nature of the counter-revolution and dictatorship which followed, and its continued legacy within the politics and society of Chile.

Course Description

The course will follow a hybrid project-based learning format; that is to say, that as well as attending traditional lectures, students are also required to address a project-based learning problem in small groups throughout the semester, as well as completing individual forms of assessment.

In addressing the politics of Chile from the coup in 1973 up to the protest movement of 2019, the lectures will draw upon a range of theories, such as democratic transition, counterinsurgency, human rights, transitional justice, the politics of memory and social movements.
