Course Overview

Students will develop a critical awareness of form and structure in music by studying various approaches to musical analysis. The course will draw on a range of analytical methods and musical genres, such as functional harmony and classical form, pitch-class set theory, rhetoric in music, and computer-aided analysis.

Course Description

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to develop a critical awareness of form and structure in music both aurally and by means of studying various approaches to musical analysis.

Main Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

  • have developed an aural awareness of musical form and a sense of the way music is structured in various genres
  • have a knowledge and understanding of a variety of analytical methods
  • be able to engage critically with methods of analysis
  • be able to relate musical analysis to music as an aural phenomenon
  • be able to carry out an analysis of a musical work, both in contributions to seminars and in the form of an essay or graphical analysis
  • be able to recognise and describe musical organisation by studying a written score.
