This course is available to students who have successfully completed years 1, 2 and 3 of MA (Hons) Education and aims to develop professional practice through professional enquiry building on the student’s knowledge and understanding of the Scottish Primary curriculum, approaches to learning and teaching and assessment. Students will develop their understanding of research informed approaches to teaching and learning in the primary school, consider the implications of these approaches for classroom practice and for addressing learner differences through beginning a detailed enquiry into one chosen aspect. Students will examine and develop their own professional knowledge, skills and values through study of planning for inclusive, integrated learning and teaching.

Students will have opportunities to engage with theory, policy and research that underpins teaching and learning in the Scottish primary classroom. In this course students will focus on developing skills in planning, knowledge of underpinning theory and research to inform planning, knowledge and skills in making assessments of children’s learning to inform planning and ultimately writing a literature review as they move into their final placement where they will undertake a small scale professional enquiry to develop their understanding of ethical considerations, methodology and skills to analyse data.
