Course Overview

The course introduces the student to the materials and manufacturing techniques used in the dental laboratory for the manufacturing of metallic dental appliances across all disciplines. Modern materials and techniques based on Computer aided design computer aided machining (CADCAM) are explored.

Course Description

This course explains the theoretical and practical components of dental alloys and the techniques used for the manufacture of metallic components used in dental appliances. Students are provided with the theory of dental refractory cast production, appliance design, metal forming techniques and metal finishing techniques. It forms the foundation for knowledge of this subject.  Students will demonstrate this knowledge in the laboratory setting in the work they produce under prescription for their client’s treatment of patients.

This course fulfils the requirements for the  relevant Government Skills for Health National Occupational Standards for Dental Technology.
