The aim of this course will be to address the concepts that underpin sustainability in healthcare. It will encourage the student to consider the complex relationship between health and the environment and examine the difficulties of providing modern healthcare while conserving the natural world.

This is an option that would be undertaken as part of the Medical Humanities SSC in Year 3 of MBChB.
This is a joint venture engaging several different healthcare departments and public bodies. As a 6 week block it will have a supported project undertaken primarily by the student covering one of a wide variety of topics including sustainable prescribing , social prescribing, active transport.
We will introduce the concepts of health and sustainability and consider the relevance of climate change to healthcare. We aim to encourage the student to view healthcare with a new perspective.
It is widely accepted that the health of future generations will be determined by our judicious use of natural resources now and it is imperative that healthcare systems adapt to address this need. We aim to raise awareness in the next generation of doctors of these issues so that environmental considerations become a core factor in future healthcare decisions.
