EG35G2: DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (2021-2022)

Last modified: 31 May 2022 13:05

Course Overview

The course is a variant of the existing EA3519 course, to be made available only to students on the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering, and forms part of the Level 3 Honours Programme. The variation covers the same Learning Outcomes, content and assessment as the existing EA3519 course, which is being taught in the same half session as this variant. What changes is that the delivery model is a blended model, whatever the state of Covid Lockdown.

Course Description

The syllabus consists of the following topics, but need not be delivered in the following order.

  1. Design of structural steelwork to Eurocode 3: beams (flexure, shear, lateral, torsional and local buckling); axially loaded columns, beam columns.
  2. Design of welded and bolted connections.
  3. Design of composite (steel and concrete) beams and slabs to Eurocode 4.
  4. Structural Concrete: Testing of hardened and fresh concrete, Mix Design. Design loads and design strength of materials. Limit state design of reinforced concrete elements to Eurocode 2. Flexural analysis of singly and doubly reinforced beams. Shear, bond, anchorage, curtailment, deflection and crack control. Reinforced concrete columns, axially loaded and eccentrically loaded short columns. Short and slender elements.

Associated with this course is an extensive laboratory exercise where concrete cubes and cylinders, and a reinforced concrete beam, are tested to destruction. In the latter case the gradual process of beam failure is carefully monitored and logged and the results compared with design theory.

Students are required to purchase the Eurocode student extracts, Concise Eurocode 3 (P362) and Steel Section Tables (P363) and the Course Tutor will advise on the arrangements for these. Students will be required to bring these documents to the final examination, which is, in any case, Open-Book. The same documents are also required to be used in the level 4 course (EG40JG), which follows on from this one.

3 Hour exam

This will be timetabled during reading week half way through the second half session (in early March, notionally in week 32), together with the campus-based EA3519 students. It will be a three hour online exam making up half of the module whether or not lockdown restrictions still apply.

Feedback will be provided to the entire class in a summary of cohort exam performance, and on an individualised basis to students on request.

Feedback

This exam covers the second half of the course and will take place during the normal exam diet at the end of the second half session. If lockdown restrictions still apply it will be an online exam, otherwise it will take place with the campus-based EA3519 students’ exam at Old Aberdeen.

Feedback will be provided to the entire class in a summary of cohort exam performance, and on an individualised basis to students on request.

Feedback

Whichever of the three assessments whose failure has contributed to the overall failure of the course will have to be resat. The weighting of the resat elements will be as they had been previously – therefore for this Exam 1 the weighting will be 50%.

The marks for the resat elements will be incorporated with the marks for the previously passed assessments to produce an overall resit mark.

Individualised feedback available to student on request
