ED401E: LEARNING AND TEACHING IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL (2020-2021)

Course Overview

This course is available to students who have successfully completed years 1, 2 and 3 of MA (Hons) Education and aims to consolidate and enhance the student’s knowledge and understanding of the Scottish Primary curriculum, approaches to learning and teaching and assessment.   Students will explore research informed approaches to teaching and learning in the primary school, and consider the implications of these approaches for classroom practice and for addressing learner differences.

Course Description

Students will have opportunities to engage with core areas of the Curriculum for Excellence (literacy, numeracy and HWB across learning) as well as all eight areas discretely, and to begin to explore inter-disciplinary approaches to learning and teaching.  The course is designed to develop:

  • Broad and detailed knowledge and understanding of the nature of Primary curriculum
  • Broad and detailed knowledge and understanding of the Scottish primary curriculum  

The course will focus on linking theory to practice; linking policy to practice; linking research to practice and identifying ways to plan for effective, integrated learning and teaching at first/second level in a Scottish Primary classroom.
