Course Overview

Learn more about German 20th-century literature, dealing with the events that shaped German and European history. As in all good literature, we will discuss universal themes and topics covering all of the most important aspects of modern life.

Course Description

The course consists of the study of selected aspects of modern German culture, involving the close analysis of a modern German text, together with lectures introducing students to the social, political and cultural context in which the text was written. The aim of the course is to develop students’ vocabulary and knowledge of German and their stylistic awareness, to provide students with the ability to analyse literary works, including film adaptations, and to apply all these skills to the study of modern texts selected for their literary importance and relevance to modern German society. This course may be taken on its own or together with GM 1050.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: One in-class exercise (50%); one essay 1500 words (50%)

Resit:  Essay 1500 words (100%).


Formative Assessment

The essays provides the opportunity for formative assessment. Further formative assessment is provided in small-group work and group and individual presentations in the tutorials.


All essays are handed back individually, on a one-to-one basis, by the course tutor. The above assessments are given CGS marks, and extensive written feedback is also given on each piece of work. Additional informal feedback on performance and tutorial participation is also given in tutorials.
