Words are at the heart of our existence. They allow us to describe our memories and our experiences; even our dreams. This course explores word meaning and word construction. It considers how words change meaning across time, space and society. It introduces you to the methods employed in constructing dictionaries and thesauri.

Words are the essence of language. Without them we literally have nothing to say. This course will teach you how to analyse word choice and meaning. It will present this in relation to change across time, space and society. We will consider how word meaning can be expressed analytically in dictionaries and thesauri. Morphology, the study of word construction, will also be considered in depth, allowing us to consider the deepest roots of meaning.
