This course offers students the chance to consider the role of belief in education. Students will study the role of mythologies (personal and societal), the impact of social change on belief and how belief manifests in the primary school curriculum. In particular students will critically consider the role, purposes, status of Religious and Moral Education (RME) in schools, and approaches to effective teaching of this area of the curriculum.

This course will critically explore some strands of belief in Scotland, both past and present. It will consider the nature of ‘belief’ and myth: from times of old, through to contemporary secular mythology. Belief in historic Scotland is examined: from stone circles; to the (counter) Reformation; to present day spiritualities.
Belief often represents a contested space. Throughout this course, students will be provoked and challenged to engage with some of the competing beliefs that feature on the belief landscape:
A variety of social and theoretical perspectives will underpin and support students’ critical engagement and reflection, as they consider their relationship to belief in Scotland. This course aims to provide a critical and informed understanding of the role of belief in education, leading to enhanced reflection in students on their beliefs and they impact what happens in their classroom(s).
