The English arrived in Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries. But English history (as opposed to prehistory) traditionally begins with the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome in 597; and the kingdom of England was not created until 927. The three intervening centuries saw the building of a new culture in ‘South Britain’ (including a large part of what is now Scotland) which laid the foundations for the English nation-state. We study all this with close reference to original source-materials. Download Course Guide
