Course Overview

This course will introduce students to a variety of texts which focus on the theme of relationships between the centre and periphery in France and the Francophone world from the 17th century onwards. The course will involve lectures and tutorials and will include the study of a play, poetry, postcolonial theory and a film.

Course Description

This introductory course involves the study of a range of set texts or topics, each dealing with key moments and debates in France's intellectual, political and socio-cultural history. All texts/topics are studied from the point of view of the relationship between centre and periphery in France and Francophone countries, and will consider the question of cultural constructions of national identity in works of literature and film.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Two 1500-2000 words essays (40% each), one oral presentation (20%).

Resit: One written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

One written assessment; one oral tutorial presentation.

The above assessments are given CGS marks, and written or verbal feedback is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance and tutorial participation is also given in tutorials.
