Course Overview

The main aim of this course is to develop a sound understanding of fundamental principles underlying the theory and practice of finance, thereby providing a strong basis for further study of advanced finance theory and cognate disciplines. The course introduces students to important concepts in finance: principles of assets pricing,  concept of risk and return, theory of interest rates and pricing fixed income securities, evaluation of investment project with a focus on embedded real options. It equips students with good analytical skills in order to understand the implications of financial decisions by understanding  the fundamentals that govern them.

Course Description

This course is about business finance. It focuses on the methods companies use to invest in real assets and how they fund those investment decisions. The course highlights the major players in financial markets and describes the models used by financial managers to make capital investment decisions and how to make decisions on the funding of those investments. Business financial decisions frequently involve enormous sums of money. Understanding the theoretical underpinning of those important decision making problems adds to your knowledge about recent developments in modern finance and methods to achieve good financial practice.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt

1 two-hour examination (60%); continuous assessment (40%) consisting of two computer-based class tests.

Resit

1 two-hour written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

This will take place via tutorial discussions and detailed feedback on a question by question basis for the class tests including statistics on the overall performance by question of the whole class.

Feedback

Feedback will also be given on a less formal basis through general tutorial discussions and general guidelines posted on MyAberdeen.
