Course Overview

This course follows Spanish Language 1 or can be taken by students who have the required level of Spanish as determined by the placement test (see below).

This is a fast-paced language course and It is aimed at students intending to pursue an honours (single or joint) degree in Hispanic Studies but is also suitable for students on other degree programmes.

Course Description

Pre-requisites: SP1027 OR some previous knowledge of Spanish or A-Levels, Highers or equivalent. All students must sit a diagnostic test before enrolling for this course.

Students attend 2 lectures and 1 grammar seminar per week to develop speaking, writing and listening skills, and attend a further hour to assist students towards the rapid development of basic communicative fluency. Students are also required to pursue private study and to submit regular written work.

 


Further Information & Notes

This course may not be taken by students who qualify for Spanish Language 1, 3 or any other more advanced courses. Students will be allocated to be appropriate Level 1 Spanish language course on the basis of a diagnostic test taken at the start of the academic year.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: One 2-hour written exam (60%), four written assessments (20%), oral component (20%).

In addition, there will be a mock exam (ungraded).

Resit: One 2-hour written exam (100%)

Formative Assessment

Regular formative assessments of different aspects of written and oral Spanish language.

Feedback

Summative assessments are given CAS marks, and written or verbal feedback is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance is also given in both written language classes and oral/aural classes.
