Course Overview

This course focuses on cultural history in the Iberian Peninsula, from the early medieval period to the present day. It explores selected key cultural social and political questions over the course of Spain's history as they are presented in a variety of written and visual texts, such as contemporaneous accounts, narrative fiction, poetry, film, painting and architecture. All texts studied will be available in English translation.

Course Description

This course assumes no knowledge of Spanish language nor previous study of history. The course aims to give you the tools to understand critically the forces, processes and events that have shaped contemporary Spain, and to analyse a stimulating variety of source materials. The course aims also to help you place Spanish history in a wider European and global perspective. It is designed to be both a stand-alone introduction to the history of Spain, and also to serve as a foundation for more advanced study at levels 2, 3 and 4.

1st Attempt: one x 1,000 word essay (40%); group presentation (20%); 1 two-hour written examination (40%)
