Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course is to enable students to develop practical research expertise by undertaking an independent research project. This can take the form of a laboratory research project, a literature research project, or a bioinformatics-type project. Students will enhance their presentation skills by presenting data produced during the project, and writing a thesis. Main Learning Outcomes: This course will enhance subject-specific knowledge of students, and analytical and presentation skills. In addition, students undertaking a laboratory-based project will enhance their practical skills. Students undertaking a literature-based or bioinformatics project will enhance their data processing skills. Content: This course is an independent 10 week research project.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Continuous assessment consisting of laboratory work (25%); 5000 word Honours Thesis (50%) and Thesis Defence (25%). Resit: Resubmission of thesis.

Formative Assessment

Discussion of thesis structure with tutor and project supervisor. Practice oral presentations.
