Course Overview

This course considers various aspects of copyright law including subject matter, the term of protection, criteria for protection, infringement and defences, and the moral rights of authors. Copyright is of importance given the value of the digital economy and the significance of the cultural industries. In terms of career opportunities, students may practice in large intellectual property firms or provide advice to large entertainment companies etc.

Course Description

Course Aims: The course is aimed at affording students a firm understanding of the main learning outcomes. Main Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students are expected to know: (i) The justifications for copyright protection; (ii) Copyright subject matter; (iii) The requirements for copyright protection; (iv) The differences between economic and moral rights; (v) The regulation of copyright in the European Union; (vi) The rules governing authorship and first ownership of copyright; (vii) Copyright infringement, defences and remedies. Knowledge and Understanding As above. Subject Specific Skills and Concepts As above. Key Skills (Transferable) The course will develop students’ research, analytical, writing, oral and communication skills through participation in a series of seminars and writing an assessed essay. It will also develop students’ independent learning skills. Content: 1. Copyright Subject Matter 2. Criteria for Protection, Authorship and ownership; Copyright duration 3. Copyright infringement 4. Defences to Infringement 5. Moral Rights 6. Remedies for Copyright Infringement 7. Justifications for Copyright Protection

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour exam. Students must answer two questions out of six (100%). Resit: None.

Formative Assessment

Each student must write two timed answers to past exam questions of their choice. Each student will receive individual feedback on each of their essays.

Feedback will be provided on the feedback form within three weeks from the date of submission.
