Course Overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of management, the internal structure and processes of organisations. Students will understand the main functions of management, what management is, what managers do and the factors that influence behaviour and performance of managers and other employees within an organisation.

The course will introduce a range of theories, research and real-life illustrations of a diverse range of management practices and organisational behaviour.  The course will cover areas of: Staffing, Groups and Teams, Leadership and Management, Human Resource Management, Organisational Structure, Culture and Change, Communication, Marketing, Branding and Organisational Processes.

The course will contain topics from the following and related areas: Individuals and teams, leadership, organisational culture, organisational change, organisational communication, human resource management, marketing and operations management.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt:

2-hour examination (70%)

Essay max word count 1000 (30%)

 

Resit: 1 two-hour written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

Students are required to undertake a multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) assessment and will receive prompt feedback (within 7 days). The online test is set early in the course to give students early feedback on whether their approach to learning is sensible. In addition to the MCQ, formative feedback will be provided through the assignment, tutorial exercises and the appropriate use of PRS during lectures.

Feedback

Essay-based assignment: through written comments returned as soon as practicable (expected within three working weeks).

Examination: feedback during summer period as set times to help students prepare for resit.
