Course Description

This course will explore theoretical and practical aspects of sound design in a wide range of film and media, particularly focusing on new media, such as games and interactive platforms.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • be able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and understanding of sound design;
  • be able to acquire a wide range of practical and technical possibilities in sound design;
  • have a general understanding of audio processing based on the basic digital signal processing techniques;
  • be able to create a portfolio of sound design work targeting different media.

(While this course is open to all fourth-year students, they are expected to have some basic to intermediate level of knowledge in audio/sound technology, have taken similar courses in the third year, such as Acousmatic Composition (MU3514), or have some experience in computer programming (in any language).)

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt

  • Bi-weekly journal submissions (40%)
  • Mid-term project - sound design for a 2-3 minute long film clip (30%)
  • Final project - sound design for a 6-minute long film clip or a one-scene game (30%)

Resit

  • 3000-word essay related to journal submissions (40%)
  • Mid-term project (30%)
  • Final project (30%)
