Course Overview

This course will provide students with the opportunity to write an extended folio of creative work in either poetry or prose. It will provide students with the opportunity to explore and extend their creative ambitions in writing and, through the reflective commentary element, enable them to contextualise their own creative achievements in relation to works by established writers. Throughout the evolution of the folio, the student will develop a thorough practical awareness of some of the key stylistic, formal and expressive possibilities available to the skilled creative writer.

Course Description

This course will provide students with the opportunity to write an extended folio of creative work in either poetry or prose approved by the programme co-ordinator for the Head of School. It will provide students with the opportunity to explore and extend their own creative ambitions in writing and, through the reflective commentary element, enable them to contextualise their own creative achievements in relation to works by established writers. Throughout the evolution of the folio, the student will develop a thorough practical awareness of some of the key stylistic, formal and expressive possibilities available to the skilled writer of poetry or prose.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: A folio of creative work in prose or poetry accompanied by a short reflective essay of 1 - 2000 words detailing the main thematic and technical challenges encountered during the writing of the project (100%). For folios of prose fiction, the total length should not exceed 8000 words. For folios of poetry, the total length should comprise between 120 - 180 lines of verse and no more than 2000 words of critical reflection. Resit: For honours students only: candidates achieving a CAS mark of 6-8 may be awarded compensatory level 1 credit. Candidates achieving a CAS mark of less than 6 will be required to submit a new dissertation.

Formative Assessment

Feedback on draft material - in individual tutorials.

Feedback

Feedback will be in the form of three appointmentswith the student's folio supervisor to discuss drafts of work as the folio progresses.
