Course Overview

This course is a concentrated design and reporting exercise which requires application of project management and team liaison skills in addition to technical design ability. Specific exercises will include interdisciplinary aspects and will relate to design requirements arising from the professional activities of the School of Engineering or its industrial contacts. Written and oral presentations form part of the course.

Course Description

Students will be assigned to supervisors appropriate to their main discipline. Where feasible, supervisors will co-operate in specifying an interdisciplinary design exercise which will then be carried out by the assigned students working as a team. Team organisation, planning and progress will be the responsibility of the students; supervisors will normally attend some team meetings. Individual reports or joint report in which individual contributions are clearly identified, are required. Log books will be kept and must be submitted. Students will be required to make a short oral presentation of their design outcome.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: In-course assessment: Continuous assessment (100%): report (80%) and oral presentation (20%).

Formative Assessment

The students need to submit individual reports or a group report clearly identifying individual contributions of each student. In addition, each student is required to submit an individual logbook. The students are also required to make an oral presentation.

Feedback

Feedback includes marking of the group report and oral presentation with feedback comments. Students can also receive individual feedback on request.
