BT1502: INTRODUCTION TO BIOBUSINESS

10 credits

Level 1

Second Term

  • this course will provide you with a flavour of the ways in which scientific ideas can be commercialised;
  • the main aim of this course is to introduce you to the language of business and demystify some of the jargon that surrounds business models, intellectual property rights and finance;
  • this is the first in a 3 course option (year 1 or 2, year 3 and year 4) that can lead to you obtaining your BSc in a discipline of Medical Science with Bio-Business and open up a whole new range of career options for you

BT3006: WORKING OUT: PLACEMENT & CAREER SKILLS

5 credits

Level 3

First Term

  • a pre-requisite for all students intending to apply for a year’s industrial placement;
  • this course covers the skills necessary to complete placement applications by exploring CV preparation;
  • writing covering letters, completing application forms, identification of your skill sets and good interview technique;
  • the course will prepare you for the workplace by making you aware of general employment skills and by helping you identify your own transferable skills;
  • the pre-placement workshops delivered as part of this course will also provide an excellent introduction to completing graduate job applications

BT3502: BIO-BUSINESS

15 credits

Level 3

Second Term

  • this course builds on the basic information provided in the introductory course (BT1502);
  • the business models used by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry are explained and discussed;
  • the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and the basis of freedom to operate are described;
  • the basics of setting up a technology led business and how to finance this are also developed

BT4005: BIOTECHNOLOGY A

30 credits

BT4501: BIOTECHNOLOGY HONOURS RESEARCH PROJECT

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

  • development of skills in time-management; 
  • development of expertise in experimental design and execution;
  • acquisition of   technical skills and the capacity to follow written instructions;
  • acquisition of skills in data analysis and interpretation; 
  • maintaining a laboratory notebook;
  • ability to write a concise thesis;
  • ability to present the major findings of the project to a general audience

BT4506: ADVANCED BIO-BUSINESS

20 credits

Level 4

Second Term

  • this is the final course of 3 on Bio-Business and deals in depth with finance, corporate governance and business models;
  • the major assessment involves the students working together in teams to set up a virtual bio-business and to pitch this business to a group of experts in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector;
  • the team will adopt the roles of senior management team and present to the experts their part of the business

BT4507: HONOURS BIOTECHNOLOGY B

60 credits

BT5007: INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

120 credits

Level 5

Full Year

  • an industrial placement allows students to experience workplace culture and makes them more effective employees following graduation;
  • placements vary considerably but in general terms, students are placed in an industrial, commercial or research environment where they obtain a breadth of practical experience to complement their degree programme;
  • students are employed by their host company and can expect to work a normal 40 hour week, possibly on a number of projects, over a full calendar year;
  • tutorial assistance from a member of the University academic staff is available via email and / or telephone throughout the year
