Course Overview

  • understanding the fundamental processes ofmicrobial infections of animals and plants; 
  • this course provides detailed information on cellular & molecular processes that determine successful infection strategies of fungi, oomycetes, bacteria and viruses; 
  • this advanced course also informs you about microbe-host interactions, microbial stress adaptation, disease control andhost resistance strategies; 
  • you will give a small presentation and participate in tutorials discussing microbial infection strategies based on research papers, which will help prepare you for your final exams

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course - Microbiology Option 2 - is to provide insight into microbial genetics and biochemistry, led by a study of the primary literature in this field. Main Learning Outcomes: In Microbiology Option 2 -, students will gain knowledge and achieve an understanding of the processes of microbial growth and development, and their impacts on the interaction of the microbe with its environment, including the human host. Content: The growth and colonisation of fungi and bacteria of their environmental niches; study of the biochemistry, physiology and pathology of a range of microbial species. Additional insight into fundamental aspects of Microbiology will be achieved by independently researching and writing a literature review essay.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 three-hour written paper (75%), in-course assessment consisting of one essay (2000 words) (25%). Resit: 1 three-hour written paper (75%), plus previous in-course assessment essay (2000 words) (25%).

Formative Assessment

- Mock exam with personal tutor allows students to practice for essay based exams and receive feedback on their performance. - Case-study exercise with feedback in preparation for summative assessments. - Practice exam questions on MyAberdeen. - Problem-solving sessions with personal tutor.

Feedback

- Essays will be marked with written comments. - Problem solving questions will be discussed during a lecture/feedback session. - Tutorial sessions will provide feedback on course content. - Comments will be provided on the mock exam question. - Feedback on problem-based learning exercise.
