Course Overview

This course studies elementary planar geometry, such as lines, triangles and circles.  It will introduce students to the basic ideas of definition, theorem and proof, and will provide essential training in rigorous problem solving. The course is strongly recommended for all students aiming at a degree in mathematics.

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course is to make the students familiar with the fundamental techniques in mathematics by learning plane geometry in a rigorous way and solving problems. It is a convenient and tangible set up in which mathematical reasoning can be developed and appreciated. As a result the students will gain confidence in understanding how mathematical arguments are constructed and verified. This is skill is fundamental to anyone who aims to pursue mathematics. Main Learning Outcomes: The students should learn and get the working knowledge of the material described in the Content section. Content: * Axioms and basic deductions. * The straight line: angles, perpendicular lines, triangles, polygons, congruence tests, inequalities for triangles, segment and angle bicestors, construction problems, parallel lines, angle sums for polygons, parallelograms and trapezia. * The circle: circles and chords, relative positions, inscribed and circumscribed polygons, four concurency points. * Similarity: triangles, polygons, homothety, geometric mean, trigonometric functions. * Regular polygons and circumference, arc length. * Areas: polygons, triangles, discs, sectors.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two hour written examination (70%) in course assessment (30%) Resit: 1 two hour written examination (100%)

Formative Assessment

Informal assessment of weekly homework through discussions in tutorials.

In-course assignments will normally be marked within one week and feedback provided to students in tutorials.
