Course Overview

This course offers a study of the society, culture and religion in Viking Age Scandinavia. Within these broad themes, special attention will be devoted to the situation during the Viking Age in Scandinavia, and also the impact from the continent and the Isles, especially regarding the change of religion, the introduction of literacy and the social links between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Detailed attention will also be paid to the Christianization process.

Course Description

Course aims for Level 4 students, in addition to the aims for Level 3: To give students detailed and critical insight into the central problems and issues of the Migration Age To diversify and enhance presentation organisation, skills and reflective thinking by undertaking response papers to class presentations To enhance team-working skills through the experience of chairing seminars

Main Learning Outcomes for Level 4 students, in addition to the ones for Level 3: To be able to critically discuss primary materially carefully and identify key themes, issues and arguments contained therein To progress and enhance the key ability to critique primary sources using relevant secondary literature and vice versa To develop reflective analytical skills through the experience of responding to the arguments of others To undertake, and reflect upon, the experience of leading seminar discussion in an informed, structured and comprehensive way To be able to explain clearly to ones peers the material under discussion

1st Attempt: Essay (4,000 words; 50%), 1000-word source review or literature review (20%), 1000-word poster (20%), seminar participation (10%).

Resit: Continuous assessment (100%), comprising 4000-word essay (100%).
