Course Overview

This course explores a number of important forest management topics including the concept of sustainable forest management, forest economics, environmental impact assessment (EIA) and forest health.

Students learn about the long history of sustainable forest management – it’s not just a modern idea! – and how forest management plans are developed.

Two visits to different forests help you recognise forest management issues in the field.  One visit is hosted by the Regional Manager and the Senior Ecologist of a major forest management company which gives you the opportunity to discuss issues with professional practitioners.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to forest planning. It will include forest management plans, yield regulation, forest normality, transformation, forest design, financial appraisal, introduction to forest protection.

This course runs in weeks 31-35, and is scheduled in Thread 1, so may have contact hours in any or all of these times:  Mondays, 9-13; Thursday, all day; Friday, 9-13.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: One 2 hour written examination (60%) coursework (40%), composed of a forestry database exercise (8%), a financial appraisal exercise (10%), a forest visit report 1000 words (10%) and a yield control exercise (12%). Resit: One 2 hour written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment will be provided during this interaction and during student-led discussions and tutor-led tutorials. A strong emphasis will be made throughout the course on informal verbal feedback during seminar and workshop sessions.

Feedback

Each student will receive individual feedback and a mark for each task. Feedback will be provided as written comments. Groups will also be given generic feedback.
