Course Overview

The general aim of the course is to expose chemical engineering students to areas of cutting edge of research in the discipline so they have skills in the topics likely to challenge chemical engineers in the period 2010-2020.

Course Description

This research-led course will be based on 3 advanced chemical engineering topics which will vary from year depending on research direction of the professional group and the challenges facing the discipline.  The topics have been designed to fit with the Institution of Chemical Engineers vision for the discipline “A Roadmap for 21st Century Chemical Engineering” Examples could include: Energy Storage & Power Generation.; Electrochemical processes; Heavy Oil properties and behaviours; Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR); Emulsion chemistry; Spectroscopy and molecular characterisation of advanced materials and processes; Multiphase flow; Carbon-Capture and Storage; Fuel Cells; Environmental Remediation and Water Treatment; Complex Systems; Process Control; Bio-fuels; Sustainable Processes; Combustion science; Deepwater oil and gas production.

The course delivery will reflect its research-led nature with each topic being covered via a mixture of lectures, workshops, laboratory experiments and simulation. The work will progress through a set of continuously assessed exercises with each student using their skills in core-chemical engineering subjects to make progress on relatively open problems. This may involve developing new thinking in the subject area which students will be challenged to achieve.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 three hour written examination (50%); continuous assessment (50%). Resit: 1 three hour written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

There are no assessments for this course.


· Students can receive feedback on their progress with the Course on request. There will be regular sessions concerning the continuous assessment project.

· Students requesting feedback on their exam performance should make an appointment during the scheduled feedback session which will be announced within 4 weeks of the publication of the exam results.
