Course Overview

This course emphasises the role of the lecturer in enabling successful learning for all learners. This course encourages you to critically reflect on your understanding of your learners and yourself as a learner.  You will be encouraged to deepen your insight of the needs and characteristics of your learners, underpinned by appropriate theoretical ideas which address factors that impact on being successful learners. The course brings together ideas of reflective practice, effective facilitation of learning and the development of skills for learning. It will support you to become flexible, reflective, innovative, creative and committed to professional development.

Course Description

The Successful Learners in Further Education course will encourage you to work collaboratively with your peers in order to:

  • Reflect on your practice and your learning and to diagnose personal learning needs

  • Develop your insight about your learners through consideration of theoretical ideas relevant to your context and your practice

  • Explore how you can further support diverse learner needs and characteristics

Participants must be teaching in a relevant context to undertake this course. 

This course is a compulsory course for the award of the Teaching Qualification in Further Education (TQFE).  If the level of study for the TQFE is at degree level (SCQF level 9) then select course code ED3096.  If the level of study is for the Postgraduate Certificate TQFE - Masters level (SCQF 11) -  then select  course code ED50JE.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: In-course written assessment by means of a 3,000 word account of a class of learners. This will be based on reflections on a minimum of two learning sessions and will draw on appropriate theoretical ideas to support the identification of learners' characteristics and needs and assess the impact of these on successful learning.

Resit: One further resit of any one of the sections that are not deemed satisfactory.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is built in to the course through for example the responses given to the online activity and in feedback to the collaborative tasks within the course.

Feedback

Oral feedback will be provided through tutorials and small group discussions. Formal written feedback on the assessed account will be provided on a feedback form and participants will be given the opportunity to discuss this feedback with tutors.
