Course Overview

Lectures, workshops and practical classes provide opportunities for consideration of key conservation issues, allowing you to discuss and develop ideas

You will visit a local nature reserve and consider some of the key management issues facing these types of site

The main written assessment provide an opportunity to study a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species of your choice in depth

You will receive detailed feedback on the essay and practical write-ups which will help you consolidate your skills in scientific writing

Course Description

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of the principles of conservation biology, using a wide range of case studies from local Scottish habitats and species to those in more diverse systems. It provides an overview of the nature and value of, and threats to, biodiversity and details the problems faced by small populations of plants and animals. Whilst focusing upon scientific aspects of conservation biology, this inter-disciplinary course covers the legislative, ethical, economic and management frameworks in which practical conservation action is taken.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written examination (50%) based on material covered in lectures and practicals and in-course assessment of practical reports and written work (50%).
Resit: A resit exam in the same format as the main exam. If the exam only is failed but the overall grade is a fail, the continuous assessment grade will be carried over; if the exam is passed but continuous assessment failed and the overall grade is a fail, the student can resubmit failed course work and the exam grade will be carried over.

Formative Assessment

Formative in-course tests will help students assess how well they are learning the course material. Student participation in these tests will be monitored and contribute to retention of the class certificate.

Feedback

Students will receive regular written feedback on each practical report before the start of the next practical class. Students who are identified as having difficulty in correctly completing the on-line tests will be invited to meet members of the course team to identify difficulties and discuss solutions.
