Course Overview

In an increasingly interdependent global business environment the issues of business ethics and corporate social responsibility are coming to the fore. The business world now realizes that how it acts and how it is perceived to act is vital to its continued existence and profitability. Corporations around the globe produce elaborate CSR policies designed not only to be read by their employees but also by the wider society. This course will engage with why these issues have become important and why businesses are increasingly aware of the need for an ethically informed workforce.

Course Description

This course covers the fundamental question of what ethics is granting a context for the discussion of business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility. It will explore a range of ethical theory and areas of ethical business relationships (employer & employee relationships, business & consumer, business & community, business & environment). It will examine the rise of social enterprise and the questions of sustainability. It will raise the question, can a business survive today without business ethics?

The course will include:

- Discussions of Ethical Theory to set the context for the course.

- Why Business Ethics is increasingly important.

- An introduction to thinking about business ethics and their application to society.

- The examination of the role and purpose of ethics in business.

- The presentation of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, and the exploration of its relevance to ethical business activity.

- An exploration of the ethical obligations and ethical ideals present in the relationship between employers and employees.

- An examination of business ethics in relation to globalization, the concept of the public good, environmental issues, competition, advertising, inequalities and human rights.

- Identifying the moral questions that business activity specifically creates.

- The rise of Social Enterprise and its impact on Business Ethics.

- Discussion of the issue that countries and communities in economic decline are in need of not only economic but also social regeneration and the role of business therein.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour examination (70%); continuous assessment (30%) consisting of a graded tutorial presentation (10%) and a 3000 word essay (20%).

Resit: 1 two-hour written examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

This will take place through tutorial discussions and through written feedback on the assignment.
