Course Overview

This course develops key legal skills for lawyers and those providing legal advice. It focuses on legal research practice (investigation strategies, advanced information searching, appropriate research methodologies, legal argument and ethical issues) including its written and oral communication; critical evaluation of resources and the operation of statutory interpretation. A practical approach to skills development is adopted with particular emphasis on cold start research and group work. The teaching is front loaded with time at the end of the course for students to use the skills developed in lectures and workshops to carry out research activities.

Course Description

The course will cover: nature of legal research; legal investigation process and advanced legal information searching; legal argument; legal problem solving; research methodologies & the use of numerical/statistical data in legal argument; ethical dimension to legal research; communication skills for lawyers; oral presentation skills and aids, group working; critical evaluation of documentary materials and online resources; the operation of statutory interpretation.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Critical analysis exercise (25%); Group oral presentations (25%) (group); Research essay (50%). Requirement for submission of the completed Reflective logbook (0%). If a student does not achieve a pass of 9 when all elements of assessment are taken into account, a resit attempt will be offered in respect of the elements not passed at first attempt.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment Feedback is to be provided as part of the answers to questions in the My Aberdeen quizzes. The workshops will all involve either preparation and/or contain a practical exercise and feedback is to be provided as part of each workshop.

Summative assessment Critical analysis exercise - feedback is to be provided on an individual basis by comments on each student's work. A feedback sheet will be produced which will contain details of the appropriate approach and information concerning commonly encountered errors. Oral presentation - feedback will be provided to each group on the day of the presentation Essay - feedback is to be provided on an individual basis by comments on each student's work.
