Course Overview

In this course we will study political, social and economic aspects of the history of Germany between 1933 and 1945, attempting to examine these matters in a historical, a comparative and a European context. Recent historiographical trends and debates about the history of the Third Reich will form a central part of this course.

Course Description

To study the on-going historical debates on the Third Reich. In this course we will study political, social, and economic aspects of the history of Germany between 1933 and 1945, and put them into a historical, comparative, and European background. Recent historiographical trends and conceptual attempts to grasp the history of the Third Reich will form an integral part of this course.

Further Information & Notes

This module is available to students on all non-History degree programmes as a Discipline Breadth course for the enhanced study requirement. However, the admission of students with a non-History degree intention will be at the discretion of the School of Divinity, History, and Philosophy. This course may not be included in a graduating curriculum with HI 303M / HI 353M (The Holocaust).

Summative Assessments

For level 4 the assessment will be one essay, c.4500 words, 60%, a response paper on class presentations c.2000 words, 20%, a primary source exercise c. 2000 words, 20% This course may not be included in a graduating curriculum with HI304C, HI 354C, HI303M, or HI353M.

Formative Assessment

Informal feedback, in particular on general expectations at level 3, at beginning of course; informative feedback on individual performance during meeting roughly half way through the course at occasion of essay progress discussion.
