Course Overview

The aim of this course is to develop critical thinking, presentation and project design skills for research together with an enhancement of the necessary skills in numeracy, data manipulation and data interpretation. The course involves substantial workshop-based and student-led practical work designed to provide direct experience of these key components.

Course Description

After completing the course students are expected to be able to:
Work successfully as part of a team
Construct and challenge scientific arguments.
Synthesise extensive and diverse information in the Earth Sciences
Use and manipulate numerical data in a robust fashion
Design and document workflows for scientific investigations
Present scientific knowledge and results to peer-groups, to users of scientific know-how and to the public at large.

Content:
Effective teams in geoscience
Construction of scientific argument, identifying and formulating hypotheses
The nature and uncertainties in data and interpretation
Design of workflows
Critical interrogation of published material
Synthesis of previous research
Presentation of science to peer-groups through writing, poster, oral and web-based media
Presentation of science to non-technical audiences through various media
Statistics in earth science - manipulating numerical data

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Through submission of group-based posters and a portfolio of individual practical work (scientific writing, poster, powerpoint/oral and digital materials) at the end of the course.

Resit: Resubmission of portfolio.

A combination of group-based peer-review sessions moderated by the course team, with feedback given after each major task.
