Course Overview

The nineteenth century was a particularly exciting time for scientific development in France and major French authors read and engaged with the works of professional scientists along with texts by popularisers of science. This course will provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the impact of science on nineteenth-century French narrative. It will consider how scientific developments influenced thinking about areas such as progress and decadence, gender relations, and ideas about life and death. It will enable students to analyse the particular ways in which literature disseminates but also questions scientific ideas.

Course Description

The nineteenth century was a particularly exciting time for scientific development and major authors read and engaged with the works of professional scientists along with texts by popularisers of science. By tracing the interactions between science and literature in this period, this course will consider the ways in which authors drew inspiration from science, as they re-evaluated assumed truths about time, creation and change. It will also look at the ways in which scientific developments influenced thinking about issues such as progress and decadence, gender relations, and ideas about life and death. Texts will change from year to year, but may include texts by authors such as, for example, Balzac, Zola and Jules Verne.

Further Information & Notes

The course may NOT be included as part of a graduating curriculum with FR 4578 (Literature and Science in Nineteenth-Century France B). It will be available in 2014/15 and in alternate sessions thereafter.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: In-course assessment: one written assignment ca 2000 words (100%) Resit: One two-hour examination. Only the marks gained at 1st attempt can be used for Honours classification.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment may be relaid to students through discussion in class or by appointment. Feedback on written work will also provide written assessment.

Feedback

The assignment receives a CAS mark which the Course Guide links to specific marking criteria, and written or verbal feedback in the form of tutors' comments is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance and tutorial participation is offered in tutorials. Tutors have office hours at which further feedback may be sought.
