Course Overview

It will introduce students to the necessary skills required for carrying out an undergraduate level research project in anthropology, and is an essential prelude to the dissertation. In it, students will identify a research project of their choice, and will be guided through the necessary steps and skills required for the production of a 4000 word project proposal.

Course Description

The course consists of seminars and workshops that will address the following issues, essential to the building of a viable anthropological research project:

  • How to formulate viable research questions;

  • How to do a literature search;

  • How to write literature reviews;

  • How to formulate research questions informed by the existing literature;

  • How to identify appropriate research methods;

  • How to assess the practicalities and ethical issues raised by a project.

Having identified the research project they hope to carry out, students will be supervised by a member of staff while they write a proposal for their honours research. The course comprises two hours a week - a combination of seminars, workshops and individual supervision – plus required and optional reading.

In-course assessment will be a detailed 4,000 word research proposal outlining and explaining the research the student intends to carry out for their honours dissertation. The proposal has to include a review of the relevant literature, an explanation and justification of the proposed research methods, and a consideration of safety and ethical issues the research may raise. (100%).

Students write a statement of intent for their research project (600 words) on which basis supervisors are allocated. Students will write drafts of their proposal that they will receive written and verbal feedback on. Feedback will be given both by the course coordinator and the individual supervisor that students will be allocated.

Further Information & Notes

This course is an essential component of the Single Honours Anthropology degree programme.  Junior honours students must pass this course to progress to senior honours.  This course will be available in the second half-session of 2014/15 as AT3529.

Summative Assessments
